NC Blue Cross – There’s more to the story.

Post on September 6, 2007 by 2 Comments »

In the N+O today there’s a short story about NC Blue and its efforts at molding health legislation in the General Assembly this year.  When a nonprofit CEO who pulls in over $3 million a year in salary says, “Personally and as a company, I think we believe in universal coverage,” watch out.

Here’s a few additional facts that didn’t make it into the story today:

Number of nonprofit NC Blue execs being paid over $1 million annually :  4

2001-2006 total profits for nonprofit NC Blue:  $871 million

Likely premium increases for NC businesses this year:  10% to 15%

Hmmm.  I wonder where to start saving money on health coverage costs?

I have my own Blue Cross story to share, it’s a doozie. The recent merger of Policy Watch and the Justice Center meant getting a new health insurance policy. I’m switching from one BC/BS policy to another BC/BS policy. My new BC/BS policy group sends a letter saying I’m not covered for treatment of any preexisting conditions because I haven’t provided proof that I was previously insured. What??? I had a BC/BS policy for goodness sakes. What’s the problem? Can’t the folks at BC/BS can’t talk to each other, it’s all the same company? Adding to the irony, I have secondary coverage through my husband’s employer…it’s a BC/BS policy too. Now I have to jump through hoops to prove to BC/BS that they’ve been insuring me all along. Now, there’s a well managed company. If I wasn’t so mad, I might find this humorous.

Sure, start sending away talented executives to other industries. That’ll really save on costs. If your idea of cost savings is ‘soak the rich’, you’re not as “progressive” as you might think:
