McCrory’s welcome “hypocrisy” comment

Posted at 4:50 PM by Rob Schofield

The mayor of Charlotte, Pat McCrory, will announce for Guv tomorrow and he's already done two very smart things. One he's made the Queen City's successful foray into modern mass transit and the related whupping given to the far right, anti-tax crowd's effort to stop it a bragging point. Two, according to the Charlotte O and Under the Dome, he's had the honesty to admit the general hypocisy amongst a huge proportion of North Carolinians on the immigration issue.

Here's the Charlotte O's report:

He called for tighter immigration enforcement, though he also pointed to the benefits Americans receive from immigrants. 'There are groundskeepers around here, I'm sure,' McCrory said. 'We're all rather hypocritical on this issue.'

While McCrory seems all but certain to advance his share of scary/objectionable ideas in the months to come, he deserves credit for at least getting these two important items right.

And speaking of developments from the "Will wonders never cease?" department, check out this comment from an actual sane person who posted on Under the Dome in response to the McCrory story (a place in which we might've expected a slew of xenophobic hate comments). Here's an excerpt:

Government authorities need to develop a viable physical border security plan which will provide a reasonable level of physical border security, but should also initiate cooperation programs with the Mexican and Canadian governments which will solicit mutual assistance and security….

Trying to hunt down millions of people living in America, some having been here for four and five decades, is a fools folly serving political interest and which will cost more than it will ever save. The human, as well as the economic, toll would be incalculable.
