If You Choose Not To Decide, You Still Have Made A Choice

That's what my years of listening to Rush have taught me.  (I know.  Rush?  Yes, I've even seen them live.  Whitesnake too.  You can take the girl out of the Navy town, but you can't take the Navy town out of the girl.)  Apparently John and Elizabeth Edwards aren't Rush fans.  They've shared the exciting revelation that they're not endorsing anyone with People.  Seriously, People magazine.  What a long, strange trip it's been, huh?  (Yes, I saw them too.)

From the way the article (I use the term loosely) is written, it would seem John's an Obama man – ish – while Elizabeth is a Clinton woman – for the most part.  So, why didn't he endorse someone?  And, why didn't she?  That would have been something, a split endorsement by a beloved couple.  Instead, all their political capital is for naught, Democrats in NC are on their own.  That's how it should be, of course, a voter alone in her booth with nothing but her conscience and her research as her guide.  Like Neil, Alex, and Geddy, "I will choose free will. "  But why bother with the People interview?  Why say "Nothing" in a big way?  Is it hard to walk away from the action?  Especially, when the decision was made so abruptly, yet so definitely?  Is it so important to people that they agree on everything, even their votes?

I tell you, the couples' psycho-drama is bustin' out all over the donkey side of things.  The Clintons are working out their issues on a world stage:  Is it pre-feminist to ride his coattails?  Post-feminist to claim his experience as her own?  Isn't that sort of emasculating, and do we detect the merest hint of revenge in that cold dish?  Are his notorious campaign slips his way of sabotaging her quest to become a historic Democratic president?  Who knows?  At least the Edwards are working it out at home.  Of course, they're allowed to since the biggest scandal that came near them was never explored by the mainstream press, here or nationally.  Nevertheless, non-endorsing to People is kind of a pathetic little coda to what once looked like the road to the White House.

    Hey Andrea —
Love the Rush take. Neal’s lyrics were often very cool — notwithstanding his libertarian leanings. As for the Edwardses, I’m sure it’s incredibly hard to have watched their ship pass them by and be consigned to lives as regular, wealthy private citizens. Hence, perhaps, the allure of People and the Colbert Report. Seems that they’re due a little slack — for a while anyway.

As they go forward, however, let’s hope that the lyrics from 1981′s “Limelight” start to hit home with both of them.

    “Living in the limelight
    The universal dream
For those who wish to seem
    Those who wish to be
    Must put aside the alienation
    Get on with the fascination
    The real relation
    The underlying theme.”
