Senate Majority Tond Rand tells the Insider that he is "unsure" about the Senate taking up the Racial Justice Act this session. The bill passed the House 68-51 last year with Republican and Democratic support.
Not to mention that three African-American males have been freed from death row in the last few months after spending a combined 36 years behind bars for crimes they did not commit.
The Racial Justice Act simply sets up a mechanism for defendants to prove that race played an improper role in their conviction or sentence. Seems like the Senate ought to be able to squeeze that into its busy schedule.
