Forty million people did not fill a prescription from a doctor last year because the medication cost too much, according to a study from a pharmaceutical research firm. The Health Blog at Consumer Reports has the details. You can read the press release here and access the full report here after you register.

My wife has had to start a new treatment for osteoporosis. She’s on the state employees plan. Yesterday she had to pay $150 for the medication that has been prescribed.

No worries, after Obama is in office we can all stop working and stay home playing World of Warcraft all day since everything will be given to us for free by the feds.

It’s insane that even those of us lucky enough to have insurance have trouble keeping it. And even if we keep it, we have trouble using it, because of premiums and restrictions.

But as much as I feel the pain when I consider filling my Rx (I’m definitely one of the 40 million in this report), it pains me even more to see the millions (like my partner) who are without health insurance completely. That’s the truly insane, and pardon the pun, absolutely sickening part of our current system.

Thank god (and progressives) for S-CHIP and Medicare or my newborn daughter wouldn’t be covered either.

It’s not that I’m unwilling to work in order to earn my healthcare coverage, or that I think everyone deserves a government handout.

But I absolutely believe that if you work hard and play by the rules, or if you’re disabled, elderly, or too young to support yourself– society has a covenant with you to take care of your basic health requirements.

In our current system, that covenant is broken.

What’s the point of being a sarcastic jerk?

People used to ask me that question a lot, and for good reason.

After much soul searching, I’ve steeled myself and crossed over to the “nice” side.

Not perfect at it by any means, but I’m working on it.

    Give it a try?

PS I know there’s nothing more obnoxious than a reformed drunk. Sorry.

What makes you think I’m being a sarcastic jerk? I really am looking forward to quiting my job and playing my lvl 12 paladin all day while Big Brother pays my bills…
