One of the featured speakers at today’s Economic Forecast Forum held by the North Carolina Chamber is the chief economist of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, not exactly the best friend to consumers or workers.
The North Carolina Chamber is the group’s North Carolina affiliate and shares its agenda, fighting for lower taxes on corporations and the wealthy, while opposing various protections for workers and regulations to protect the environment. For years, the Chamber (formerly known as North Carolinians for Business and Industry) led the opposition to requiring insurance companies to cover mental illnesses the same way they cover physical ailments.
And you are helping pay to advocate for that agenda. The Chamber’s website lists several state institutions as Patron members, meaning they paid dues of at least $5,000. The list includes Western Carolina University and UNC Healthcare. The Industrial Extension Service at N.C. State is an Advocate member, paying dues of $10,000.
Your tax dollars at work—to make sure the N.C. Chamber gets its way.
