While his comments refer primarily to legal immigrants, at the end of his tirade he refers to the "rest of the hogs" at the trough - i.e. citizens of our country and NC.

JOE, aside from the policy problem of excluding legal immigrant children from SCHIP, I think people are reacting to Sen. Burr calling children "hogs at the trough." It's hard to listen more than once given that sort of rhetoric.

Just to clarify -- when Burr said "hogs at the trough" he was not referring to bankers or auto industry executives.

[...] demopazzia wrote an interesting post today on Senator Burr on Kids: Hogs at the troughHere’s a quick excerpt In our latest video, Adam Linker and I take a look at a comment by NC’s Senator Richard Burr during a recent Congressional debate. Congress was debating and ultimately passed an expansion to the state children’s health insurance program which will mean over $100 million in new federal money to help NC parents buy affordable health coverage for their kids. Senator Burr not only didn’t vote for the bill but also didn’t have very kind words to say about some kids who may now qualify for coverage. [...]

Did North Carolina's senior U.S. Senator really call kids who receive publicly subsidized health care "hogs at the trough"? Hogs at the trough??!!!

What could possibly inspire a wealthy politician with a large staff and enough time and money on his hands to fix himself up for the TV cameras with a nice, telegenic purple tie and perfectly coiffed hair to utter such an ignorant, mean spirited statement? And this from a man who seems to have delusions of seeking national office?? Simply amazing.
