It’s always fascinating to see what national political reporters think of North Carolina politicians, people they don’t interact with on a day-to-day basis like journalists and advocates in the state.
The latest example of a puzzling suggestion about a North Carolina figure comes from the well-respected Matthew Cooper, the Editor-at-Large of Talking Points Memo and former White House correspondent for TIME.
A recent New York Times story about the Supreme Court considers that for the first time in its history, every member of the court is a former federal court of appeals judge. Chief Justice John Roberts says that’s a good thing, but Cooper thinks it’s probably better to have people with diverse backgrounds, and lists several politicians as examples for President Obama to consider if he has the opportunity to make a nomination.
Cooper includes Jennifer Granholm, Kathleen Sebelius, Janet Napolitano, Ed Rendell, and “even North Carolina Governor Mike Easley.”
Excuse me?
Easley is a nice guy and there were some noteworthy accomplishments in his mixed record as North Carolina’s governor. But the U.S. Supreme Court?
Earl Warren, Thurgood Marshall, Harry Blackmun, Mike Easley.
Hmmm.
