Top of the morning

The federal government is not the only one giving money to the banks or subsidizing those big Wall Street bonuses and $87,000 rugs. The unemployed are too.

Many states are distributing unemployment benefits by issuing debit cards instead of a checks. States have deals with big financial institutions like Charlotte’s own Bank of America to issue the cards.

Every time the cardholder withdraws some of his or her money, the bank gets a fee. As MSNBC reports, the banks charge card holders even for calling to check their balance. Lovely.
