Top of the morning

House Minority Leader Paul Stam apparently is a fan of the HBO series Big Love that chronicles the lives of a modern day polygamous family in Utah.

Stam keeps bringing up polygamy in debates at the General Assembly that have nothing to do with it. Tuesday Stam questioned the phrase “committed relationship” used in a proposal to give parents the ability to choose a comprehensive abstinence-based sex education school curriculum for their children instead of the abstinence-only approach favored by the religious right.

The legislation says the broader sex education will teach “respect for marriage and committed relationships.” Stam says that could mean polygamy.  Huh?

Stam’s website includes his platform that says “we must decide whether North Carolina will allow same-sex marriage and polygamy,” an offensive remark about gay couples.

And polygamy? Where did that come from? Nobody is talking about legalizing polygamy this year or any other year.

In fact, nobody is mentioning it at all—except Stam.

It must be Big Love.

Like Rep. Stam, the Family Policy Council loves to talk about polygamy. Rest assured, their next threat is beastiality, a second favorite. Begs the question, why do their minds always go there?
