He told us, but nobody listened

Posted at 5:45 PM by Chris Fitzsimon

Thomas Jefferson was born on this date in 1743. One quote that is often left out of all the tributes to him couldn’t be more revelant today, in the era of AIG, Bear Stearns, and Merrill Lynch.

I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial by strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country.

They are still bidding defiance, even as they receive our money.

Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton fought for their respective views of what the U.S. economy should be. Should we have an agrarian based economy with a decentralized government or a commerce based economy with a strong centralized government?

Well, Hamilton won that war. Hamilton got the big centralized government supporting business while a decentralized government idea was set aside. Jefferson saw the future much differently then did the Secretary of the Treasury Hamilton. Who is right is yet to be known. The experiment continues.

Some people regard private enterprise as a predatory tiger to be shot. Others look on it as a cow they can milk. Not enough people see it as a healthy horse, pulling a sturdy wagon.
-Winston Churchill
