Sen. Richard Burr says health reform bad for drug industry

Posted at 11:13 AM by Adam Searing

North Carolina’s Senator of the moment, Richard Burr, spoke out strongly at a GlaxoSmithKline forum yesterday, stating that government involvement in health reform would adversely affect the drug industry. How? They might make fewer profits and have less incentive to bring all those desperately-needed (and heavily advertised) drugs to market.

Burr’s other comment was just as illuminating. When asked to point to how government involvment in health care was detrimental to the system, he mentioned Medicare and Medicaid. Burr should know that right here in North Carolina we have a national model Medicaid primary care program – Community Care – that is providing first-class health care to children and parents and saving – that’s right, saving – the state hundreds of millions of dollars every year. Look like private insurance could stand to learn a thing or two from North Carolina’s Medicaid program. That’s good, because nobody will learn much of anything from Senator Burr.

He once sent me response letter saying he was opposed to public disclosure of fast-track drug information by the FDA because even doctors don’t understand it. If doctors don’t understand why are the prescribing & why are drug companies allowed to sell? One of the drugs in question was Vioxx.

Please forgive the fat finger typos.

I can’t believe how blatant he is about his loyalties.

I assumed they were typos of outrage.

Every time the guy opens his mouth, something stupid comes out. Too many years breathing gas fumes from lawnmowers? What a dumbell.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported on March 23, 2009 that Congressman Burr had received $355,000 from tobacco interests since 1995 (second only to Mitch McConnell) and in 2009 he co-sponsored legislation that would ban advertising in magazines and newspapers and prohibit certain words from being used to describe tobacco products in hopes that he could persuade members of Congress to not pass a different bill that would be even tougher on the tobacco industry

Health care reform is bad for the drug companies just like jail is bad for heroin pushers. In these cases, bad is good.

Calling Grier Martin, we need a hero….not another zero!

He’s flirting, Adam.

Burr knows the RSCC is strapped for cash, and isn’t going to be able to help him get a 2-1 money advantage in the upcoming campaign like they did when he ran against Bowles. We need to remember this date, so when his quarterly reports show up, we can see how well this sales pitch worked.

Make that the NRSC. Look what they and the AMA PAC spent on mailers and commercials during Sep-Oct 2004.
