Top of the morning
The fallout from continues from the appearance of former Congressman and anti-immigration zealot Tom Tancredo at UNC-Chapel Hill last week. Tancredo’s speech was disrupted by student protestors who shouted him down, held a banner in front of him and at some point broke a window.
UNC officials have condemned the behavior and apologized to Tancredo. The student group that invited him, Youth for Western Civilization, has invited another anti-immigration speaker, former Congressman Virgil Goode, to appear on campus this week.
The ACLU of North Carolina called the protest “de facto censorship,” and pundits on the right and left have criticized the students for not allowing Tancredo to speak, though the folks on the right are gleefully using the event to condemn almost everything they don’t like, from public universities to liberals in general.
Less discussed is the group that brought him here, Youth for Western Civilization. Inside Higher Education has a story on the group this morning, including a link to a troubling report about the organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The Independent has an interview with Riley Matheson, the head of the UNC chapter of YWC. The more you read about the group, the clearer it is that denying Tancredo the right to speak isn’t the only disturbing thing about the whole episode.
