Mike McIntyre wants health reform (as long as it doesn’t cost any money)

[1]McIntyre joined such distinguished company as Virginia Foxx, Sue Myrick, Walter Jones, and Patrick McHenry last week to once again [2] vote against the Democratic budget that is crucial for health reform. He objects to the amount of spending in the bill and presumably thinks that doing nothing to contain health costs will somehow improve our long term deficit.

McIntyre is telling [3] his constituents that he is committed to health reform. But that is a sham if he is unwilling to support the spending necessary to achieve universal coverage.

The budget also includes reconciliation instructions for President Obama’s health reform agenda. That means his health care legislation can pass with 51 votes, which is critical to prevent industry-funded politicians from derailing reform.

It’s difficult to tell what McIntyre thinks he is accomplishing by voting against the budget. He does not oppose all spending on principle because he supported the stimulus package and he is touting [4] all of the money that will go to dredging waterways and rebuilding beaches. So why support the stimulus package and oppose the budget?

I suspect that McIntyre wants to play a callow political game where he tells beach residents that he supported dredging and explains to his conservative constituents that he voted against the big, bad budget bill because of all that spending. I don’t think the people in his district will buy it.

Mike McIntyre and his family have a wonderful array of affordable, tax-payer subsidized health care options available to them. If McIntyre wants his constituents to get similar treatment, as he claims, he needs to vote like he means it.
