Sounding the Alarm about Orwell’s State Health Plan

The NC Justice Center’s Adam Linker today sees a big reaction to his op-ed yesterday in the News and Observer – the lead editorial [1] and a hilarious cartoon [2] by Dwane Powell. The subject is the “shockingly invasive, punitive and poorly designed” so-called wellness provisions in the recently-passed state health plan bailout bill. These provisions subject state employees to random blood and “smokerlyzer” testing for smoking and contemplate similar requirements on weight.

While the new attention to this issue is great, I think it’s worth it to point out that the Justice Center’s Health Access Coalition has been sounding the alarm about this for a while:

We’ve posted video of state health plan director Jack Walker [3] and other plan officials [4] talking about plans for the smokerlyzer – both to the media and to legislators.

Adam first wrote [5] about this on the Pulse way back in mid-March. And multiple [6] times since then.

The NC Health Report, the Health Access Coalition’s weekly electronic newsletter (distributed to all legislators), covered the issue [7] extensively around the April vote.

It’s taken a while to get broader notice that these so-called “wellness” provisions are truly outrageous, but we’re glad it’s finally happening.
