He’s still, he’s still Mikey from the block. The block with the biggest spread on Easy Street. Easley Street? That’s not fair, Mike Easley’s no JLo , but he does have some stones. Taking a whole lot of free rides, of both the automotive and plane trip varieties, wasn’t enough for our former guv. He’s now trying to prevent the N&O from finding out just what he was up to during his two terms in office. Certainly the Capital press could’ve made this much of an effort, oh, I don’t know, maybe two or three years ago, but better late than never. There’s much more to come I feel sure, but Easley-gate already has a body count. NCSU’s provost fell on his sword yesterday, UNC system president Erskine Bowles wants State’s chairman out, and Easley’s former bodyguard is raising questions about his time off. As Bill Clinton, John Edwards, and now Mike Easley have taught us, when Democrats go down, man, they don’t go alone.
So, much as it shocks me to type these words: Is Phil Berger right ? Should there be special prosecutor looking into these shifty shenanigans? To be fair, we don’t know if AG Roy Cooper is already on the case. We can only hope he is, but would it be better for Roy if an independent investigator took on this particular case? He’s certainly up to the task, having taken down Meg Scott Phipps and Jim Black, among others, but when the state’s highest office is suspected of corruption, even if the governor has left in his questionable car, is it better to get an independent involved? I wish we didn’t have to consider such questions, but thanks to the N&O (in a good way) and Mike Easley (not in a good way), we do.
