This Morning’s NC House Health Budget Cuts

Posted at 10:16 AM by Adam Searing

We post the official NC House Health and Human Services budget cut list from this morning. This is revised over the one from last week and includes even deeper cuts. Health insurance for children is closed, public dental health programs are eliminated, dental care for adults along with physical, occupational and speech therapy is basically gone from Medicaid:

These cuts take over $3 billion out of the North Carolina economy, leave tens of millions of federal dollars (like for children’s health insurance) lying on the table, and take direct aim at our already crippled mental health system.

Capping NCHC and virtually refusing $15 million of federal money for our SCHIP to save the state $5 million!!!!!! What??? When are legislators going to look past their immediate term and consider the long term consequences of their decisions? Will the time ever come that decision-makers will demonstrate the wisdom of Ben Franklin’s adage …”an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The consequences of capping NCHC (on top of the recent reduction in benefits) will be devastating – both immediately and long-term for everyone … not just for those who qualify or the providers but for all of us as citizens, tax payers, and people of good conscience. We all should pray that people with good sense get power and in the meantime, pray that people with power get good sense!!!
