Blue Cross lobbyist in the clear

Blue Cross lobbyist Ken Wright will not face criminal charges after a bribery investigation conducted by the SBI.

The Insider confirmed the background story. Apparently Blue Cross was trying to squeeze $400,000 out of physician Eric Troyer. The insurer claimed that it overpaid the doctor and it wanted money back. Blue Cross was withholding claims payments until it got the $400,000.

Dr. Troyer told his legislator, Rep. Fred Steen, about the problem. Steen filed legislation that would establish some safeguards for doctors against Blue Cross. The new law would create an appeals process for physicians and protect those doctors who collect overpayments because of coding errors instead of fraud.

In his complaint Steen claimed that the Blue Cross lobbyist offered to forgive the doctor’s debt if the legislation was dropped.

Since criminal charges are not in the offing it will be interesting to see what happens with the legislation. Also, is Blue Cross still demanding the back payments?

I wonder why doctors don’t like insurance companies?
