NC Blue Cross – 66.7% market share in small business market

NC Blue has 96.8% [1] market share in the individual market.

NC Blue has 72.5% [2] overall market share.

NC Blue is similarly dominant in the small business (groups with less than 50 employees) market in NC where they insure 26,800 groups and have 66.7% of the market [3]. Their closest competitor, United HealthCare, insures 6,500 groups. So, small business in NC basically have a “choice.” Either they “choose” Blue Cross – which the vast majority seem to be required to do. Or a few might be able to “choose” one other company.

Tell me again why an affordable public health insurance plan option would be a bad idea for small businesses.
