Glaxo funds right wing assault on health reform

Drug making giant GlaxoSmithKline, which has its U.S. headquarters in Research Triangle Park, is publicly making nice with President Obama saying it will be a constructive partner in health reform.

But the company’s 2008 charitable grants report [1] shows that behind-the-scenes GSK is contributing to every national right wing think tank that opposes health reform. These think tanks attack every viable solution to the health care crisis and create misleading and destructive ads.

GSK gave to The Heartland Institute, for example, which is producing ads like this one [2] claiming that Obama wants to nationalize health care. The drug maker also is giving money to the American Enterprise Institute, the Galen Institute, the Institute for Policy Innovation, the Manhattan Institute for Policy, and the State Policy Network (the John Locke Foundation is a member).

While GSK is willing to sit and talk, the company is busy kicking people under the table.
