Top of the morning

Post on August 7, 2009 by 5 Comments »

The ongoing PBS series about the history of comedy, Make ‘Em Laugh, is really a history of the United States in the last century.

The latest episode focused on satire and included a segment on Mad Magazine and its spoofs of popular songs of the time that also had a message about the issues of the day.

Here are the Mad lyrics in 1961 to Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies.”

Blue Cross
Had me agree
To a new Blue Cross
Policy!

Blue Cross
Said I would be
Happy that Blue Cross
Covered me!

Then I took a fall,
Leg in a splint;
They said that I
Should read the fine print!

When a very high
Fever I ran,
They told me I
Took out the wrong plan!

That’s Blue Cross!
There seems to be
Plenty for Blue Cross!
None for me!

The more things change…

Thank you for sharing this. One of my favorite sayings is that when we fail to learn from history then we are doomed to repeat it. Health Care Reform has been needed for generations and we have been unable to obtain enough political support for it. I have been preaching the same things about the need for Health Care Reform for years but could never find a politician willing to put his career on the line and actually bring the facts out into the open. If more people would understand that this is not a “new” issue, but one that has been growing for generations to reach this point. If only more people would understand that there will be very serious negative consequences of maintaining the status quo.

Now the industry is spending 1 million a day on lies to defeat the public option. I guess if they are successful in killing it, they will add this “cost of doing business” onto to our premiums. Our new “improved” premiums will also have to cover the fat bonuses that the instigators will reward themselves for this crime against the people.

Anyone watching the Rachel Maddow show? She is identifying the individuals behind the groups against Health Care Reform and protest participants. I really wish people that are protesting and believing the lies about Health Care Reform would realize that they are directly working on behalf of insurance companies and the GOP.

How do we reach those who are scared or complacent? I talk to so many people everyday who think they are fine because they can afford their health care. It is not until people can’t that they want change. They also think they can fall back on government disability but it takes so long to get it. BCBSNC knows people are either scared or complacent that is why they get away with huge salaries, rate increases, and fine print exclusions.

I don’t have an easy answer for that besides talking to people and sharing the truth. You could use examples of other people and explain how anything can happen because life is just crazy like that. There are many people, myself included, that never thought something would happen that would change my entire life and what I had planned until it did happen. It is far too easy to be complacent and think that you control life. But car accidents, injuries, and diseases can occur when you least expect it and are least prepared for it. Picking up the pieces of a shattered life takes years and the only hope that many people have of obtaining access to care after a catastrophic event is if we pass Health Care Reform with a National Public Health Option.

The President and many elected officials have put it as bluntly as they can to the point that anyone can understand it if they would just open their ears and actually listen. But there are too many talking heads on TV and radio that are spreading the lies, too many organizations that are funded by the Republicans and insurance companies that are lying and putting out calls for interference of meetings and calls for violence, and too many people that are allowing their hatred and fear to control their actions and opinions. The only suggestions that I would have is to explain currently existing programs in detail, how Health Care Reform will help everyone, and encourage the President to meet with those that are promoting and spreading lies and violence with a one time offer to stop the lies and promotion of violence or proceed with legal action for inciting to riot, threatening public officials, and whatever else would be applicable. Something has to be done before someone gets hurt by those that are promoting violence and spreading the lies.
