Here’s a reason not to lose hope in the health care debate when you hear all the absurd claims that patients will lose their choice of doctor and supporters of reform are compared to Hitler. It’s the same things opponents of the Canadian health care system said 50 years ago when progressives proposed it there.
You can read an an interesting account of how the Canadian system began in Saskatchewan in the early 1960 by historian Warren Breckman in the latest issue of Lapham’s Quarterly.
The last province adopted the national plan in 1970 and despite some problems, the vast majority of Canadians support their health care system. Maybe we will come to our senses too one day.
