Good News/Bad News

Posted at 5:54 PM by Andrea Verykoukis

Politico reports that support for abortion rights in the US is waning. You might not have noticed the piece, as intent as you were on the Edwards sludge that’s still churning all over the place. (If there’s anything sadder than middle-aged people planning a rooftop wedding [Poor Dave Matthews, what did he ever to do to you, John Edwards?], it’s got to be a video of those losers making the beast with two backs. That’s politics, folks!)

Bourgie nookie doesn’t worry me, but ebbing support for reproductive rights does. When I think about the Amber Alert posted the other night for a 12-year-old who is nine months pregnant, I wonder why people think abortion should be illegal. I can understand thinking we need to take steps to reduce abortions, but making them illegal? No, I cannot see why we would deny women and girls options they may desperately need.

The good news is that while support for a woman’s reproductive freedom is decreasing, so is concern about the issue generally. “The shift in the public’s mood over the issue of abortion coincides with a decline in the number of Americans who called abortion a ‘critical issue’–from 28 percent in 2006 to 15 percent this year.” I guess we’ve lost some ground, but perhaps our foes have lost some fervency. Spending so much time worrying about health care, jobs, global warming, and the economy means we just can’t get too worked up about other things. Is there an upside to our recession and our bass-ackward health care system after all?

It is little wonder that people are starting to loose support for abortion when the party that supports abortion is trying to take over the healthcare system.
