
One final but important note about Tuesday’s elections that has largely been ignored by the state’s media.
The voters in Lee County approved a 1/4 cent increase in the county sales tax to renovate Lee County High School. And they did it despite the usual overheated rhetoric from the anti-government groups led by Dallas Woodhouse and Americans for the Prosperous.
The final decision to raise the tax is now up to the Lee County Commissioners but the law required voter approval first.
And it wasn’t that close. The tax hike passed by almost a two-to-one margin.
The sales tax is hardly perfect and disproportionately affects the poor. But its passage in Lee County sends an important message that even in this era of anti-government tea parties, people are willing to pay higher taxes to improve their communities.
What must they be thinking over there on Right Wing Avenue?
