McIntyre and Shuler stay “true blue”

imagesIn the bio on his website [1] Rep. Mike McIntyre includes this line:

Congressman McIntyre has received the “true blue” award for two consecutive years for his 100% voting record on family issues.

That seems nice. But McIntyre does not explain who certifies his blue credentials or what family issues he favors.

It turns out that the award is granted by the Family Research Council [2], which basically exists to promote the ideas of the Republican Party. The group has to engage in logical contortions to explain how expanding health insurance to more families will hurt families. But health reform will help Democrats politically, so contort they must.

From what I can tell Mike McIntyre and Heath Shuler are the only “true blue” Democrats in Congress. That probably has something to do with their opposition to accessible and affordable health care. If they voted for health reform they would likely lose the blue label.

McIntyre’s case is especially painful to watch as he has decided to come up with a different excuse every week for opposing reform. In August McIntyre said [3] he could not support reform because of proposed cuts to Medicare and the expansion of benefits to illegal immigrants. Then in his most recent newsletter [4] he lists his reasons for voting against the House bill and Medicare and immigrants were nowhere to be found.

It seems Shuler and McIntyre are willing to sell out average North Carolina families for the Family Research Council.
