Republican health care chaos

imagesWith the flood of health care legislation introduced by the right recently you may have forgotten that Republicans controlled Washington for six years. During that time there were no efforts to expand health insurance to all Americans or eliminate preexisting conditions or any of the things now deemed a top concern of conservative lawmakers.

The trouble is that Republicans can’t agree on any bill. They only know that they don’t like anything Democrats propose. I asked [1] recently why Republicans are drafting a new health care proposal when Sen. Richard Burr has already introduced an alternative to the plan that passed the House.

The dismissal of Burr’s bill is actually worse than I thought. The national GOP website [2] actually lists all of the “common-sense” reforms proposed by Republicans in recent months. The list does not include Burr’s legislation. The list also excludes the “American Health Care Solutions Act” — a bill co-sponsored [3] by Rep. Sue Myrick.

The list does include ten or so bills introduced by Republican members of Congress ranging from the “Common Sense Health Reform and Affordability Act” to the “Empowering Patients First Act”.

Then there is the GOP blog, which touts [4] a poll showing that half of Americans do not think it’s the government’s responsibility to ensure that Americans have health care coverage. But all of these Republican bills are federal and do things like establishing high-risk pools — presumably those things are meant to ensure that more American’s have health care coverage.

So should the government be involved or not? And if the government shouldn’t be involved in health care then Republicans should be trying to eliminate Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, and the VA. And how are we supposed to pass a Republican bill when there are 15 pieces of legislation floating around?
