The Blue Cross campaign to kill health reform at the state level

imagesThinkProgress reports that The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association — of which NC Blue Cross is a member — is working to craft legislation that will allow states to strike down key health reform provisions as unconstitutional. (Thanks to Facing South for highlighting the story.)

An organization that works with right-wing state legislators, the American Legislative Exchange Council, has written model legislation to kill insurance exchanges and a public option in various states.

To develop the legislation, ALEC worked with a three member task force including Joan Gardner, executive director of state services with the BCBS Association’s Office of Policy and Representation.

This move is not shocking, given the recent behavior of BCBS of North Carolina. But it is disturbing because while BCBS has some say over national policy, it is one of the most powerful organizations in the General Assembly. Apparently we are not on the attack list right now. But BCBSNC lobbyists are probably working hard behind the scenes to figure out how to nix any provision that could cost them a dime.
