Top of the morning

It has been a strange week in Republicandom. State GOP Chair Tom Fetzer tells the Nash County faithful that the Democrats’ health care reform package is bad because it hurts senior citizens.

If you are over 65 years old, you better be concerned about what’s in that (health care) bill, because they don’t care about you,” Fetzer said. “They want to transfer care from you to young people because that’s who will vote for them.

Just a few days before that, Republican Congressman Patrick McHenry, Fetzer’s kindred spirit, announced he wants to put Ronald Reagan’s picture on the fifty dollar bill.

That would be the Ronald Reagan who opposed the creation of Medicare that Fetzer and his crew misleadingly claim Democrats want to cut.

Fetzer ought to know about Reagan’s opposition to Medicare.  The N.C. Republican Party website has prominently displayed an anti-Medicare ad featuring Reagan as the spokesperson.

Reagan opposed forcing people to give money to the government in return for a future promised entitlement.

Whether you agreed with him or not we have it. As a result, people have been forced to pay into this failing and nearly bankrupt system for decades.

Now the Democrats want to cut the benefits (by 1/2 a trillion dollars) to the very people who have been pilfered by the government.

It was a sham from the beginning. Reagan was smart enough to know it.

When you refer to the “bankrupt system” are you talking about the ethically and morally bankrupt system that Wall Street created to usher in the Great Recession? People paid into the Wall Street system for years only to lose everything.

Those on the right sure didn’t mind when President George W. and congress handed over billions in corporate welfare, promised entitlement, so CEOs could resume their preferred life style.

Reagan wannabes want to return to the days of 19th robber barons when there was no tax and the American worker received a $1 a day for a full days work.

Jake, sorry my obtuse friend. Let me clarify.

    Bankrupt system = Medicare.

“People paid into the Wall Street system for years only to lose everything.” Ummm, no one pays into Wall Street. It’s an exchange. Not a one way street. Only the government operates in the manner in which you describe.

You obviously do not realize that conservatives are strongly opposed to corporate welfare… you know, like Obamacare.
