The Works Progress Administration’s 75 anniversary is tomorrow, and we’re holding an event [1] to celebrate — and show how massive public jobs efforts can still help us today. Here is the state archive of WPA materials [2], including some great old photos.

John Paul Stevens, who is 89, has made recent rumblings about retiring from the Supreme Court [3]. Rumors have surrounded Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s future as well.Top candidates for a replacement, should one become necessary, are Pamela Karlan of Stanford [4] and current Solicitor General Elena Kagan [5], who was confirmed with some Republican support as well.

Prepare your ears for the old conservative prevarication called “judicial activism.” Any judge President Obama nominates is likely to be tarred with this brush, even though by any metric a case like Citizens United (and a litany of others) reflect right-wing activism of the highest order. The difference between “activist” and “conservative” for right-wing commentators is the desired result on a given case.

Despite the collapse in housing prices over the past few years, consumer confidence remains fairly high: 64 percent of people think now is a good time to buy a house [6], and that prices have effectively hit bottom.

Via that last link, Bill Moyers in January asked a bunch of people about the future of the American Dream [7]. Very interesting answers from the likes of Bob Edgar, Michael Pollan, Bob Herbert, Holly Sklar, Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, Wendell Potter and the late, great Howard Zinn. You can watch the videos, too [8].

The snowdrifts of pollen got you down? Check out this photographic representation of a pine pollen cloud [9] as a Charlotte man mows his lawn.
