Steve Troxler and Cherie Berry get tax-payer funded health insurance while trying to block health care for all North Carolinians

troxlerThe offices of Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry and Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler have confirmed to me that both commissioners are enrolled in the State Health Plan — a tax-payer subsidized plan that requires Berry and Troxler to pay no premium.

I certainly do not begrudge anyone getting health insurance through the State Health Plan. And I don’t mind subsidizing that coverage.

Although Berry and Troxler enjoy tax-payer funded coverage they are trying to kill health reform by claiming that expanding health insurance to low-income North Carolinians is too burdensome for the state. The state would not have to pay the costs for newly eligible Medicaid enrollees until 2017.

So is the State Health Plan too great a burden for North Carolina? If so, I would think Berry and Troxler would drop their coverage on principle.

Of course, if either of them have preexisting conditions they would likely spend the rest of their careers uninsured, because people with preexisting conditions don’t have many options for health coverage. And that’s a situation Berry and Troxler are fighting to maintain.

Perhaps Berry and Troxler think they are better than the rest of us; but they shouldn’t be surprised if Attorney General Roy Cooper declines to join their shameless crusade.
