Gov. Beverly Perdue’s recommended budget released Tuesday would cut nearly $1 billion for the coming year by eliminating 600 jobs, trimming an additional 5 to 7 percent from most departments, and cracking down on Medicaid waste and abuse.
Senate Majority Leader Martin Nesbitt (D-Buncombe) says even with additional federal support, the public should expect more difficult cuts as North Carolina adjusts to a jobless recovery.
Nesbitt, who appears on “News & Views” this weekend, says despite the protracted recession he is determined to restore some of the funding to the mental health system that was slashed in the final days of last year’s budget battle.

Billion dollar cut yet to come. If you are a person with a disability you already know what that means — further cuts in services. My bet is that the phrase “determined to resotre some of the funding to the mental health system” has more to do with directing funds to the state level administrative purpose then about money for shoring up services. Jobs may be saved but people in those jobs won’t have anything to offer in the way of services because the money won’t be there for such things.
