South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford [1]reiterated this week that he would veto legislation that would raise the Palmetto state’s cigarette tax by 50 cents per pack.

Sanford’s counterpart in North Carolina may very well have the same decision to make this summer as legislators look for new ways to shore-up the budget.

NC Prevention Partners’ Board Chair Peg O’Connell [2] is optimistic Governor Bev Perdue and legislators will see the value of moving North Carolina’s cigarette tax closer to the national average [3].

O’Connell discusses taxes, the state’s smoking ban, and stroke prevention this weekend on “News & Views” with Chris Fitzsimon.
