Here’s a quote to keep in mind if all the tea partiers and anti-immigration zealots are getting to you.

The world is so strained and the daily stresses so severe that our worries and our fears at times almost overwhelm us. It is a temptation to be against everything, such are the times. But being against things doesn’t improve the situation. The true answers cannot come from the pressure of the extremist groups who would destroy more then they improve.

That was North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford in the summer of 1964, talking about the opponents of civil rights and the anti-poverty efforts of the Johnson Administration.

Senator Dan Blue cited the quote Friday in his keynote speech at a symposium at Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy held to honor Sanford’s legacy and to mark the release of a new book, To Right These Wrongs,  about the North Carolina Fund that Sanford created.
