House lets young adults remain on State Health Plan and cancels random cheek swab program

Yesterday, the House voted to allow young adults who age out of State Health Plan coverage to stay on the plan until he or she turns 26. National reform requires that health plans allow young adults to remain on a parent’s plan until age 26. The rub is that the provision doesn’t apply until September. In the meantime, the State Health Plan can continue to kick out young adults.
The State Health Plan, much to its credit, requested that the legislature allow young adults currently on the plan to remain, even if they are not full time students. This does not mean that the plan will reopen to young adults, but like I said, it’s something.
Also, the State Health Plan has recommended that the General Assembly not require it to conduct random cheek swabs on state employees. I’m not giving the SHP or the legislature a sticker for that one, as the original plan was insulting and misguided and should be canceled. While they are at it the fat tax should also be squashed.
Next up: the Senate.
