Sen. Richard Burr kicked off his re-election campaign by promising to defund health reform. Don’t be confused about what defunding health reform means. The primary expenditures are expanding Medicaid to create a safety net for people with low incomes, premium subsidies for those who can’t afford private insurance, and new investments in prevention and community health centers. And when Burr says he supports expanding insurance to those with preexisting conditions it just ain’t so. His health reform alternative says that insurance companies must offer you insurance if you have a preexisting condition, but they can raise your premiums by any amount, thus making a policy unobtainable.
In other election news, it turns out that affair accusations have boosted the fortunes of Republican South Carolina gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley. Haley has flatly denied the affairs and even says she will resign if proof of an affair ever surfaces. That’s slightly different than the approach taken by SC Gov. Mark Sanford who spent hours musing in front of the press about his Argentinian soul mate.
“Do you understand edification?” asks congressional candidate and stream of craziness blogger Tim D’Annunzio. I thought I did before reading his ramblings.
And for those who live in G-Vegas (Greenville, for those who don’t know) the big news today is that City Councilwoman Kandie Smith was arrested downtown early Sunday morning. Downtown is the centerpiece in an ongoing battle between those who claim that it needs more security and those who say that the police and nightclubs are overly aggressive. Smith says she was checking on constituent concerns that policing is too aggressive. While talking to constituents Smith says police asked a group to move along. She began asking questions of the police and did not reveal that she was on city council until after the arrest. We’ve yet to hear the police side of the story and it looks like the State Bureau of Investigation will look into the matter.
