Rep. Mike McIntyre – Budget “hawk”, but only when it’s convenient

Last fall, Democratic Rep. Mike McIntyre was proclaiming his intention to vote against national health reform and did so. The reason? It seemed to change depending on his audience, but one major one that came through loud and clear was “It costs way too much money.”
Well and good (although wrong given CBO estimates that the Reform bill will reduce the federal deficit by over $100 billion), but what to make of Rep. McIntyre’s first Grants Newsletter published yesterday that McIntyre says is “designed to inform the businesses, schools, health centers, and non-profit organizations of Southeastern North Carolina about grants that are available from the federal government…” McIntyre will even consider supporting grant applications: “if you would like for our office to support your grant application, please feel free to contact my Economic Development Director..”
I guess Rep. McIntyre is OK with spending federal money directly for organizations in his district, but not so excited about spending federal money on making sure all of his constituents have access to affordable health care.
