President appoints Dr. Don Berwick appointed to head Medicare and Medicaid

Post on July 7, 2010 by 2 Comments »

Despite being supported by most medical providers, hospitals, consumer groups, many business groups and others, Dr. Don Berwick’s nomination to head Medicare and Medicaid was headed for trouble driven by ideological opposition from many Republicans. Today President Obama used his power to make recess appointments to put Berwick in charge of Medicare and Medicaid. Given Berwick’s stature and long history of focusing on drastically improving the quality and efficiency of health care for patients, this was a smart move.

Right now, I think it is a blessing for us that finally someone is in control of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, a position that hasn’t been filled since 2006. Donald Berwick was hired by President Obama himself to run the center. This should be a good move within the wake of the financial reform bill. Many people are applying for personal loans to cover medical expenses or getting on Medicare. Berwick will use his experience and knowledge to make an effort to improve our health care system. Let us hope for the best.

The sphere of Medicare and Medicaid needs changes, as for me. I hope that Dr. Don Berwick, being nominated by the President as the head of Medicare will do his best in order to provide necessary changes. Medicare is really expensive today and it’s sometimes very difficult to cover the medical bills. Indeed, a lot of people have to consolidate their medical bills in order to reduce their debt at least a bit and some consumers even apply to payday loan companies to get some money in order to cover these bills.
