March for immigrant justice and against racial profiling today
It’s true: the federal court ruling issued yesterday is excellent news if you care about justice, public safety and the constitution. In fact, if I ever have a little girl, I’m seriously considering naming her “Susan Bolton Shaw.”*
That doesn’t mean one court ruling fixes all the problems with immigration law, and it certainly doesn’t mean the work is done.
Hence, remember to show up at today’s march for immigrant justice at 5 p.m. (and don’t forget to bring extra bottled water and a hat or umbrella). Lend your support.
Our take, from today’s media advisory:
The march comes one day after a federal judge struck down many of the law’s most objectionable portions, such as requiring legal immigrants to carry papers with them at all times and enabling local law enforcement to stop anyone they suspect of being in the country without permission.
“We’re pleased the court recognized how dangerous the Arizona law is, and we think this ruling is a step in the right direction,” said Dani Martinez-Moore of the NC Justice Center. “But misguided anti-immigrant policies still pose a threat to the constitution and public safety, here in North Carolina and across the country.”
*P.S. C’mon, folks, the law was always unconstitutional. States don’t get to make immigration policy. They don’t get to make treaties, either. We understand frustration with our broken immigration system, but that’s just another reason to support comprehensive immigration reform. Really.
