Student achievement must be considered in advance of any reassignment plan (video)

Last week the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP filed a formal complaint with U.S. Justice Department about the Wake County School Board’s decision to end its socioeconomic diversity policy.  Now parents throughout the county are speaking out about the board’s latest version of a 16-zone assignment scheme.

The Wake Education Partnership and the local chamber of commerce hope to diffuse much of the recent tension by hiring a consultant, who favors an approach called controlled choice.

The Partnership’s new director Steve Parrott joins us this weekend on News & Views to discuss the reassignment plan, and what steps are needed to avoid the creation of high-poverty, failing schools in the state’s largest school district.

Do you really think WEP’s hiring their own consultant will “reduce the tension?” They wouldn’t have hired him if unless the expected him to deliver the kind of plan that they want, and what WEP wants is very much opposed to the direction of the school board. The move was designed to bring pressure, not ease tension.

It will be interesting to read the reactions to Mr. Parrott’s interview. John Tedesco has been relentlessly attached for the past nine months, for not having the “expertise” to deal with reassignment. Mr. Parrott comes from the business world and has less experience in these matters than Tedesco.
