Hints of consolidation worry some advocates (video)

Governor Perdue has told members of the Council of State to expect new recommendations in November for merging, eliminating, or consolidating pieces of state government. While Perdue has not given specifics on how she will “transform” government, many are worried that it may result in fewer services for low-income families struggling through the Great Recession.

Louisa Warren, senior policy advocate with the NC Justice Center, says 1 in 6 North Carolinians is now living in poverty. And she notes that the demand for food stamps, child-care subsidies, and other assistance programs continues to surge.

Warren joins us this weekend on News & Views to discuss the implications of the latest Census data and why the state must avoid devastating budget cuts in the coming fiscal year.
