NC – along with 35 states and DC – received a substantial consumer assistance grant today from the federal government as part of the new health reform law. The Affordable Care Act mandates that states establish health care consumer assistance programs to help all consumers with finding good, affordable health insurance plans as the new law takes effect. This is really good news, and shows NC is moving forward to establish a program that can really help people figure out their health insurance options. The NC Department of Insurance, who received the grant, plans to build on its successful consumer assistance program for older adults that has helped hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians figure out their health options under Medicare and get better and more affordable coverage.
