AARP: NC Seniors wary of budget cuts, debt-reducing proposals

Voters in the mid-term elections said their top concern was the economy and the nation’s skyrocketing debt. Now Republicans who took over the U.S. House on pledges to reduce federal spending must decide whether to advance the proposals from the co-chairs of President Obama’s fiscal commission.

The draft plan put forth by the bi-partisan panel would cut Social Security and Medicare, raise the retirement age to 69 by 2075,  and eliminate or curb popular tax breaks such as the mortgage interest deduction.

Bob Garner of AARP North Carolina says seniors realize that the current level of spending is unsustainable, but remain very wary of recommendations that would slash their benefits. Garner notes the heated rhetoric that preceded passage of the Affordable Care Act is another reason North Carolina seniors may be nervous about the latest ideas being floated.
