Top of the morning

Incoming Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger named newly elected Republican Senator Buck Newton [1] one of three chairs of a Senate Judiciary Committee this week.

Newton is a personal injury lawyer from Wilson who defeated Democrat A.B. Swindell in the November election. The appointment should make for some interesting discussions in the Republican Senate Caucus.

Berger and other Republican leaders have talked repeatedly about tort reform as part of their agenda, mentioning it as recently as last week in their appearances before business leaders at the annual Economic Forecast Forum in Raleigh.

Newton may have a different view, based on his law practice, which seems to focus on the type of lawsuits that Republican leaders often complain about.  Take a look at the website [2] of Newton’s law firm and be sure to check out the video that you can also watch below.  There is apparently no truth to the rumor that it has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America.
