Two new reports on our health, as GOP debates repeal

A new study by the Department of Health and Human Services released Tuesday shows that up to 50 percent of Americans under age 65 have some type of pre-existing health condition. Up to one in five non-elderly Americans with a pre-existing condition is uninsured.
The findings come as the GOP-led House has vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which will prevent Americans from being denied coverage or charged significantly higher premiums, starting in 2014.
NC Prevention Partners also released on Tuesday its 2010 health report card, spotlighting areas that need more attention and investment.
While progress was good in the area of tobacco prevention, the news was not so good in the areas of nutrition and physical activity–the big drivers in the North Carolina’s exploding obesity problem.
For progress in nutrition, North Carolina earned a D. For physical activity the state received a D+.
According to the Report Card, 65.4 % of adults in the state are overweight or obese. This is up from 57.9% in 2000 and currently only 20% of adults eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Perhaps even more alarming is that the number of high school student who are obese has gone from 12.9% in 2000 to 13.4 percent in 2010. Not a huge jump but definitely a trend in the wrong direction.
This newly issued Report Card is the first time that NC Prevention Partners has done a 10 year look back on the health of the state. To see the full report card, click here .
