Charter schools with no pricetags

A major piece of GOP-sponsored legislation that would overhaul how the state monitors public charter schools and lift an existing 100-school cap is short on some details. Like how much it’s going to cost.

    Isn’t it obvious? They intend to divert money from the current system to the new schools – including appropriating many of the existing systems.

    These are the early days of the push to dismantle, and then privatize, the education system. It is a slippery slope and we are almost over the edge.

    Yes, that money will go from the current system to the charter schools. And yes, that is obvious.

    But how much? What’s the expected demand over the next few years? How will this affect counties, many of whom are in financial binds of their own? What’s going to be the cost of creating a new 11-member commission that, presumably, would have to assemble staff to monitor the additional charter schools?

    DPI currently has four people, three consultants and one administrative assistant, doing that work for the 100 existing charters.This new commission (in a time when lots of other state programs are being consolidated) surely is going to cost something to set up and get running.

    Those are the type of questions that are generally tackled by non-partisan researchers who write the fiscal notes, and the absence of one makes it impossible to guess what any future cost would be.

    Public education was given its chance , and it failed miserably. Bring on innovation !

    Public education has done a far better job than it gets credit for. And, no public schools have not failed! While lifting the cap on charters looks big, watch out for the vouchers which are on the way. The Republican idiots want to offer $2500 per year (again details are not there) for private school attendees and home schoolers. We are being asked to support a bunch of religious schools and elite schools like the ones owned by Bob Luddy. And, yes, this whole think could easily cost $250-400 million per year, FROM THE PUBLIC SCHOOL BUDGETS. The Republicans hate the public school systems, listening the FOX and other rightwing whackjobs. And they are jolly well going to make the public schools totally fail for reasons which can only be fathomed by those equally demented. Just remember all this five years from now when class sizes in public schools are 45 pupils and those in charter and private schools are 20 — and you are paying for the difference. And, if you think that any of this is being done for the less fortunate, I have some underwater land in Carteret to sell you.
