Join the discussion: Name the new North Carolina currency

Given that the Republican Speaker of the House has made pretty clear that he’s interested in exploring the idea of North Carolina minting its own currency [1], it’s probably time for us to begin thinking about what the new money will look like and what it will be called.

As Sarah Ovaska notes below [2], “liberty dollars” is one idea.

In light of the surname of the driving force behind the bill, Rep. Glen “I know longer officially endorse the John Birch Society” Bradley, another idea would be to feature the lawmaker himself, or perhaps his namesake, Milton, whose mug was featured on some bills in the board game “Life” back in the 60’s and 70’s. We could call them “Milties.”

Another idea might be to feature arch-conservative, federal government-hating North Carolina politicians. Perhaps Jesse Helms could be on the front with a pair of hands [3] on the back.

What else? Tillis tender? Berger bucks? Shaftesbury shekels? Von Mieses pieces?

We could always feature the Monopoly man in honor of Time-Warner Cable.

Of course, the most appropriate name would be one we would import another country. While the right generally doesn’t like things that originate north of the border, you have to admit, in this case the nickname of the Canadian dollar coin is the most apt.

They call them loonies [4].

Feel free to suggest other names and ideas that might occur.
