Making the case for nonpartisan redistricting (video)

Fourteen Democrats and nine Republicans have signed on to House Bill 824 to reform North Carolina’s redistricting process.

The legislation relies on a model developed in Iowa that strips political influence from the contentious process of drawing district lines.

At Tuesday’s press conference, N.C. Policy Watch Executive Director Chris Fitzsimon spoke in support of the measure that would make redistricting nonpartisan for first time ever in the Tar Heel state.

How unfortunate that the Dems didn’t run with this idea last year when some Republicans brought it up.

It’s never too early to do the right thing. It can sometimes be too late, though.

I can remember a speech Bev Perdue made before last year’s elections, in which she stressed how important it was that Democrats maintain a majority so that they could continue to control redistricting. Two days after the election she was suddenly lobbying for a non-partisan approach.

    Personally, I’d like to see NC adopt a non-partisan approach…. in 2021.

This week North Carolina begins the process of holding public hearings on redistricting– the same week the state of Iowa approves its map. We start as they finish. The difference is the process. Iowa takes politics out of it. We don’t. But maybe that will change.
