Who’s advising these people?

The list of certifiably crazy proposals just keeps on a comin’ over on Jones Street. This week, some state senators introduced something they’re calling the “School Violence Protection Act” [1]. Among other things, the bill:

  • Requires the expulsion of kids who have been twice alleged to be delinquent or undisciplined, and
  • Specifies that “No school employee shall be reprimanded or dismissed for acting or failing to act to stop or intervene in an altercation between students.”

Got that? The first one isn’t a “two strikes and you’re out” policy; it’s “two pitches and you’re out.” As for the second provision, it looks like kindergarten teachers will now be free to send those unruly boys to the back of the room to settle their troubles without any meddlesome interference from adults.

Seriously, the 2011 session of the General Assembly is starting to become an embarrassment to the state of North Carolina.
