More Pope appointees
(UPDATED) Previously, we reported here on the Pulse that Senate Majority Leader Phil Berger had appointed several people from the Art Pope Empire to various state boards and commissions.
A few days later, word came that Berger had actually appointed Pope himself to the Board of Directors of the Golden Leaf Foundation.
Not surprisingly, however, that was not the end of the story. Last week, House Speaker Thom Tillis joined in the fun by adding the following people to his official appointments list:
- All-purpose Republican lawyer and head of the N.C. Property Rights Coalition, Kieran Shanahan — who Berger originally appointed to the Clean Water Management Trust Fund — was switched by Tillis to the Centennial Authority,
- Locke Foundation staffer (and spouse of Berger appointee Rick Martinez) Donna Martinez, who was selected for the North Carolina Agency for Public Telecommunications,
-Locke Foundation staff “historian” Troy Kickler, who was placed on the Natural Heritage Trust Fund Board of Trustees, and
-Head of the Pope-funded Institute on Constitutional Law, Bob Orr, to the Board of Trustees of the UNC Center for Public Television
For those of you trying to keep score, that makes 11 Pope people (including J. Arthur himself) - at least according to our count. Let us know if we’ve missed anyone.
UPDATED — We’ve just discovered two more Pope people — bringing the total to 13. They are:
-Locke Foundation board members Tom Roberg and Herb Berkowitz. Roberg was appointed by Tillis to the Board of Trustees of the N.C. School of Science and Math and Berkowitz was appointed to the same body as Donna Martinez — the N.C. Agency for Public Telecommunications.
