Groups release letter asking Senator Hagan to oppose massive federal Medicaid cuts.

Today nonprofits, advocacy groups and state leaders released a letter to Senator Kay Hagan regarding the enormous cuts in federal funding to state Medicaid programs now being discussed in Washington.   Not only would these cuts adversely impact vulnerable children, the elderly, and the disabled in NC, but would also result in increased number of uninsured North Carolinians and have a “significant and harmful effect on state economies and jobs.”

The fact is, NC’s Medicaid program is a successful national model for delivering not only needed care, but better care.  Through our Community Care of NC program, we coordinate care for hundreds of thousands of people on Medicaid and reducing unnecessary emergency room usage, avoiding expensive and harmful drug interactions.  Innovations like these improve the health and lives of everyone on Medicaid.  And that’s not all.  Better care is less expensive care.  Independent studies have shown again and again that NC’s Community Care program reduces so much unnecessary care and improves health so significantly that is also saves money.

The massive federal cuts now being discussed in Washington would put all that at risk.
